2.Itisthecellsintheretinathatareclosetothepigmentcelllayerandarestimulatedbyweaklight,thatis,theycanrecognizeblackandwhiteobjectsunderweaklight.Mostlydistributedontheperipheryofthefovea,thecellsareelongated,withalengthofabout40-60micronsandadiameterof2microns.Theyarecomposedoftheinnersegment,outersegment,nucleus,andterminalfoot.Theoutersegmentiscylindricalwithstrongrefractivepowerandhorizontalstripes.Itcontainsrhodopsin.Itisabindingproteinthatcanbedecomposedintoopsinandretinal(alsocalledvitaminAaldehyde)undertheactionoflight.ThelattercanbereducedtovitaminAundertheactionofreductase.ItcanbeseenthatvitaminAistherawmaterialofrhodopsin.IfvitaminAisinsufficient,itwillaffectthesynthesisofrhodopsinandthenormalprogressofitsphotochemicalreaction,causingnightblindness.Intheinnersegment,apartfromthefibrilbundles,therearemainlyalargenumberoflongmitochondria(producingdevices),vesiclesoftheendoplasmicreticulum,andRNAparticles.
