Historicalevolution
TheHongKongUniversityofScienceandTechnologywasestablishedbecauseoftheeconomicstructurechangeinthe1980s.AsHongKonghasenteredaperiodofeconomictransformation,theHongKonggovernmentexpectsthattheHongKongeconomywillbetransformedintoahigh-techandcommercial-basedeconomy,andindustryandcommercerequiremoreuniversitystudentstocooperate.Therefore,theHongKonggovernmentdecidedtobuildathirduniversitytomeetthisneed.
In1984,the"Sino-BritishJointDeclaration"wassigned,confirmingthattheBritishwouldhandoverHongKongsovereigntytothePeople’sRepublicofChinain1997.Atthattime,theBritishtroopswithdrewinbatches,andsomemilitarycampswereremovedasaresult.Vacant.In1986,theHongKonggovernmentselectedtheformerKohimaCamp(KohimaCamp)inTaiPoTsai,thenorthernpartoftheClearWaterBayPeninsulaintheNewTerritoriestobuildtheHongKongUniversityofScienceandTechnology.

InFebruary1994,thetechnologyoflaserdepositiontoproducediamondthinfilmpolymerdevelopedbyHKUSTobtainedthefirstpatentintheUnitedStates.
InJanuary1995,BillGatesvisitedHKUSTtogiveaspeechon"TheFutureofDigitalRevolution".
InJanuary1996,ProfessorWuJiawei,PresidentoftheUniversityofScienceandTechnology,initiatedtheorganizationoftheEastAsianResearchUniversityAssociation.
InDecember1997,theKellogg-HKUSTEMBAprogramwasofficiallylaunched.

Asearlyas1996,ProfessorWuJiawei,foundingpresidentoftheUniversityofScienceandTechnologyofChina,initiatedtheestablishmentoftheAssociationofEastAsianResearchUniversities(AEARU)toleadexchangesandcooperationamongtopuniversitiesintheregion.Until2013,HKUSTwasrankedfirstintheQSAsianUniversityRankingsforthreeconsecutiveyears,andcontinuedtoestablishcontactswithmoreoverseaspartners."TheRoadtoAcademicExcellence:TheRiseofResearchUniversities"exploresthesuccessfactorsofHKUSTbecominganexcellentresearchuniversity.Theuniversity’sleadershipactivelyengagesininternationalexchangesandworkswithscholarsfromallovertheworldtocopewithglobalchallenges.In2015,HKUSTwastheonlyhighereducationinstitutioninAsia.ItwasinvitedtotheWorldEconomicForuminDavos,Switzerland,anddiscussedthecombinationofrealityandvirtualworldwithworld-renownedscholarsandexpertsinitsIdeasLab(IdeasLab).Themeaningofhumansociety.HKUSTisalsoamemberoftheGlobalForumofUniversityPresidentsundertheWorldEconomicForum.

SchoolEmblem
HongKongTheemblemoftheUniversityofScienceandTechnologyhasmultiplesymbolicmeanings.Gazingfromtheperspectiveofimagery,abovethebooksofthesourceofknowledge,agoldenbrainofwisdomemerged.Amongthearmsholdingthebookshighisnotonlyaflaskrepresentingscience,butalsoalaunchtowerrepresentingengineeringandtechnology,orcommunicationandmanagement.太阳发出金色的光芒是非常传统的中国色彩，映照在代表香港的湛蓝色大海上。支持着这些象征标志的是三个希腊字母，分别为“upsilon”、“psi”和“tau”，音译则作“UST”。总而言之，校徽跟科大本身一样，蕴含多重意义。
标志
香港科技大学以日晷作为大学标志。这件名为“时间之轮”的雕塑迄立于科大广场中央，是由香港赛马会委托一对居于澳洲西部珀斯的爱尔兰藉艺术家夫妇Charles和JoanWalsh-Smith创作而成。
日晷以钢铸造，安装在水池中央的宽阶平台上，象征著时间的流逝。平台上还有浮雕壁画，描绘了中国在科学和技术领域所取得的39项成就。红色日晷于1991年10月8日安装完成后随即成为科大的标志，透过其形态、功能、历史和未来之间相互交织，反映出科大的不同面貌。
校风
