ThehistoryofUniversityofScienceandTechnologyBeijingcanbetracedbacktothemodernhistoryofChinafoundedbyBeiyangWesternSchoolin1895Thefirstdisciplineofminingandmetallurgy.
BeijingInstituteofIronandSteelIndustry
AfterthefoundingofthePeople’sRepublicofChina,inordertotrainmetallurgicalprofessionalstomeettheneedsofsocialisteconomicconstruction,in1952,theCentralPeople’sGovernmentdecidedtoestablishtheInstituteofIronandSteel.InAprilofthesameyear,theDepartmentofMetallurgyandMiningofBeiyangUniversity(nowTianjinUniversity),TangshanRailwayInstitute(nowSouthwestJiaotongUniversity),DepartmentofMetallurgy,DepartmentofMetallurgy,ShanxiUniversity,DepartmentofMiningandMetallurgy,NorthwestInstituteofTechnology,DepartmentofMetallurgyandMining,BeijingInstituteofTechnology,andTheironandsteelmachinerymajorandthemetalcombinationoftheMiningDepartmentofTsinghuaUniversityformallyestablishedtheBeijingIronandSteelIndustryInstitutewithinTsinghuaUniversity,withfivedepartmentsincludingmining,metallurgy,machinery,metallurgicalprocessing,andmetalpressureprocessing.Theschoolsystemisfouryears.BeijingInstituteofIronandSteelIndustryisthefirstironandsteelindustryinstitutionofhigherlearningestablishedinNewChina.
InAugust1953,BeijingInstituteofIronandSteelIndustrymovedfromTsinghuaUniversitytoitsnewcampusonXueyuanRoad,HaidianDistrict.Inthesameyear,theschoolbeganpostgraduateeducation.
In1954,PremierZhouEnlaivisitedtheBeijingInstituteofIronandSteelIndustryforthefirsttime.Inthesameyear,theschoolsystemwaschangedtofiveyears.
OnAugust17,1956,PremierZhouEnlaiaccompaniedPrinceSihanouktovisitthesteelcourtyard.Inthesameyear,theDepartmentofPhysicsandChemistrywasestablished,withtwomajorsinmetalphysicsandmetallurgicalphysicsandchemistry.Theschoolsystemwasfiveandahalfyears.

In1960,BeijingInstituteofIronandSteelIndustrywasrenamedBeijingInstituteofIronandSteelandwasapprovedasanationalkeyuniversity.
Bythebeginningof1966,theinstitutehadatotalofmining,beneficiation,ironandsteelmetallurgy,goldwind,metalpressureprocessing,metallurgicalmachinedrawing,miningmachinery,metallurgicalfurnace,casting,metalphysics,metallurgicalphysicalchemistry,industrialautomation12majors;morethan800teachersandmorethan5,000undergraduatestudents;120foreigngraduatestudentsandcollegestudentsareaccepted.
Duringthe"CulturalRevolution",theBeijingInstituteofIronandSteelwasdestroyedandenrollmentwassuspendedfor5years.
InOctober1969,LinBiaoissuedthe"No.1Order",andBeijingIronandSteelInstitutefacedthefateofrelocationjustlikeitsneighboringbrotheruniversities.InDecember,theBeijingIronandSteelInstitutesentanadvanceteamof50peopletoJiangxi,planningtobuilda“May7th”farminYuganCounty,andthenaschool.Later,theadvanceteamwassenttoYunnanbecauseitwasnotsuitabletorunschoolsinthelocalarea,anditwasplannedtomergewithKunmingInstituteofTechnology.PremierZhoutoldChairmanMao:TherearemanyironandsteelindustriesinNorthChina,andtheAcademyofIronandSteelisindispensable.Therefore,theBeijingInstituteofIronandSteelcontinuestostayinBeijingtorunaschool.
In1972,theschoolresumedenrollment.By1976,fivethree-yearstudentswereenrolled.
Aftersmashingthe"GangofFour",afterrestorationandrectification,theBeijingInstituteofIronandSteelestablishedanormalteachingorder,andtheschoolsystemwaschangedtofouryears.
In1978,majorsinmetalcorrosionscience,electroniccomputerscience,metallurgicalautomationinstrumentation,machinerymanufacturing,fluidtransmissionandcontrol,appliedmathematics,physics,chemistry,mechanics,managementengineering,scientificandtechnologicalforeignlanguageswereadded.Inthesameyear,two-yearandfour-yeargraduatestudentswereenrolled.
In1981,withtheapprovaloftheStateCouncil,theschoolbecamethefirstbatchofdoctoralandmaster'sdegreegrantingunitsinthecountry.
In1984,theBeijingInstituteofIronandSteelreportedtotheMinistryofMetallurgicalIndustry,requestingthattheBeijingInstituteofIronandSteelbechangedtoBeijingBeiyangUniversityorBeijingUniversityofScienceandTechnology,butneitherwasapproved.
In1984,itwasapprovedbytheStateCounciltobecomeoneofthefirstbatchof22universitiesinthecountrytopilotgraduateschools.
In1987,threeapplicationsforrenamedBeijingInstituteofTechnology,BeijingUniversityofMaterialsScienceandTechnology,ChinaUniversityofMaterialsScienceandTechnology,ChinaUniversityofMetallurgy,NorthernUniversity,etc.wereunsuccessful.

In1988,whentheBeijingInstituteofIronandSteelreappliedforanewnamechange,duetoBeijingInstituteofTechnologyThenamehasbeenchangedtoBeijingInstituteofTechnology,sotheleadersoftheGeneralOfficeoftheStateCouncilnegotiatedwithschoolleadersandsomeoldprofessorsanddecidedtochangethenametoBeijingUniversityofScienceandTechnology.InMay1997,theschoolfirstenteredtheranksofthenational"211Project"constructioncollegesanduniversities.
In1998,theschoolwastransferredfromtheMinistryofMetallurgicalIndustrytotheMinistryofEducation.Inthesameyear,BeijingMetallurgicalManagementCollegewasmerged.
In2006,itbecamethefirstbatchofcollegesanduniversitiestobuildthe985projectsuperiordisciplineinnovationplatform.
In2007,hewasselectedasthefirstbatchofnationalcollegestudentstoimplementtheinnovativeexperimentalplan.
In2008,theschoolgymnasiumwasusedasavenuefortheOlympicandParalympicGames,completingtheBeijingOlympicGamesJudo,Taekwondo,ParalympicWheelchairBasketball,andWheelchairRugby.
InJune2010,hewasselectedasoneofthefirstbatchof"ExcellentEngineerEducationandTrainingProgram"collegesanduniversitiesoftheMinistryofEducation.
In2011,hewasselectedintotheDisciplinaryInnovationandIntelligenceIntroducingProgramofHigherEducationInstitutions(Plan111).
InMay2013,itwasratedasanationalgraduateemploymentexperienceuniversitybytheMinistryofEducation.InJuly,itwasselectedasoneofthefirstdemonstrationbasesforstudyinginChinabytheMinistryofEducation.
In2014,theUniversity-ledSteelGenericTechnologyCollaborativeInnovationCenterwasselectedintotheHigherEducationInnovationCapabilityImprovementPlan(2011Plan).
In2016,theBasicEducationManagementCenterwasestablished.InDecemberofthesameyear,itwasselectedasoneofthefirstbatchofBeijingDemonstrationUniversitiesforDeepeningInnovationandEntrepreneurshipEducationReform.
InSeptember2017,UniversityofScienceandTechnologyBeijingwasselectedasoneofthefirstbatchof"DoubleFirstClass"world-classdisciplineconstructionuniversitiesinthecountry.
InMarch2018,itwasselectedasthefirstbatchof"NationalNewEngineeringResearchandPracticeProjects"bytheMinistryofEducation.Inthesameyear,itbecameauniversityjointlyestablishedbytheNationalDefenseScience,TechnologyandIndustryBureauandtheMinistryofEducation;itwasselectedasoneofthefirstbatchofpilotuniversitiesforthecomprehensivereformof"ThreeAll-roundEducation"bytheMinistryofEducation.
InAugust2019,itwasratedasatypicaluniversitywithexperienceininnovationandentrepreneurshipinthecountrybytheMinistryofEducation.InSeptember,hebecameafoundingmemberandgoverningunitoftheChinaArtificialIntelligenceEducationAssociation.
OnSeptember30,2020,becameamemberofthe"ResourcesandEnvironmentPovertyAlleviationAlliance"ofuniversities.InOctober,itwasdesignatedbytheStateIntellectualPropertyOfficeandtheMinistryofEducationasthe2020NationalIntellectualPropertyPilotUniversity.InNovember,itwasidentifiedasthesecondbatchofpilotunitsfortheconstructionofeducationalfinancialmedia.
AsofJanuary2021,theschoolhasdevelopedintoanationalkeyuniversitydirectlyundertheMinistryofEducation,withafocusonengineeringandcoordinateddevelopmentofengineering,science,management,literature,economics,andlaw.
