ThehistoryofBeijingJiaotongUniversitydatesbackto1896ThepredecessorwastheBeijingRailwayManagementInstituteestablishedbytheQinggovernmentinSeptember1909.
InthefirstyearofXuantongintheQingDynasty(1909),aftermorethantenmonthsofinspection,thepostsecretaryZengKunhuadraftedthe"BookoftheEstablishmentofRailwayManagementSchoolbytheMinistryofPostsandCommunication",whichadvocatedroadadministrationandcultivationRailwaymanagementpersonnel,andstronglyadvocatedtheestablishmentofarailwaymanagementschool.Inthesameyear,withtheapprovaloftheQingcourtbyXuShichang,theofficialletteroftheMinistryofPostsandCommunication,the"RailwayManagementInstitute"wasestablishedinFuyouStreet,Beijing.ThiswasthebeginningofthefoundingofBeijingJiaotongUniversityandthefirstmanagementschoolinChina.Thefollowingyear,inordertostrengthenthepostandtelecommunicationsindustry,postandtelecommunicationsclasseswereadded,andtheschoolwasrenamed"TrafficTrainingInstitute",markingthebeginningofChina'stelecommunicationsproject.
In1912,theRepublicofChinawasestablished.TheschoolwaschangedtotheMinistryofTransportationoftheRepublicofChinaandrenamedas"TransportationTrainingInstituteoftheMinistryofTransportation."Precedent.Later,theDepartmentofTelecommunicationswasestablished,andalargenumberofwell-knownscholarssuchasAcademicianJianShuishengandAcademicianHuangHongjiacameouthere.Railwayandtelecommunicationsengineering,aswellasclassesinEnglishandFrencharetheinitialfoundationofPekingJiaotongUniversity.IntheRepublicofChina,thetalentsofdriving,management,accounting,andmaterialswerethemostsuccessfulinBeijingJiaotongUniversity.
In1917,theMinistryofCommunicationsoftheRepublicofChinareorganizedtheschoolinto"BeijingRailwayManagementSchool"and"BeijingPostandTelecommunicationsSchool"accordingtothedifferencesinrailways,postandtelecommunications.

In1921,YeGongchuo,thentheheadoftransportationoftheBeiyanggovernment,orderedShanghaiTechnicalCollege,BeijingRailwayManagementSchoolandBeijingThefourschoolsofPostsandTelecommunicationsSchoolandTangshanTechnicalCollegeweremergedandnamed"JiaotongUniversity",withthreeschoolsinBeijing,ShanghaiandTangunderthenameof"JiaotongUniversityBeijingSchool".YeGongchuoproposedtoruntheschoolinaccordancewiththeEuropeanandAmericaneducationsystem,setupaboardofdirectorsandpersonallyservedaschairman;inthesameyear,inordertointegratethedisciplinesofthethreeschoolsofJiaotongUniversity,theDepartmentofRadio,WiredandElectricalEngineering,andtheDepartmentofElectricalEngineeringofthePingyuanSchoolandtheDepartmentofElectricalEngineeringofTangSchoolweretransferredtoShanghai.,TheCivilEngineeringDepartmentofShanghaiSchoolwastransferredtoTangSchool,andsometrafficmanagementteachersweretransferredtoPeiping.InMay1922,duetofactionaldisputesintheBeiyanggovernment,YeGongchuowasforcedtoresign,andJiaotongUniversitydisintegratedafterlessthanayear.
In1923,theschoolwasrenamed"BeijingJiaotongUniversity".
In1928,theNanjingNationalGovernmentreplacedtheBeiyanggovernmentandBeijingwasrenamedPeiping;inJuneofthesameyear,theschoolwasrenamed"TheThirdJiaotongUniversityoftheMinistryofCommunications";inSeptemberofthesameyear,thePing,Shanghai,andTangschoolsonceagainItwasmergedtoform"JiaotongUniversity";inOctoberofthesameyear,theschoolwaschangedtotheMinistryofRailwaysofNanjingNationalGovernment.
InFebruary1929,SunKexun,thenMinisterofRailwaysoftheNanjingNationalGovernment,madePingyuanindependent,andtheschoolwasrenamed"JiaotongUniversityBeipingTransportationManagementCollege";inJulyofthesameyear,itwasrenamed"JiaotongUniversity".PekingRailwayManagementInstitute".

In1937,theLugouBridgeIncidentbrokeoutandPingandTianjinfelloneafteranother.DuetothetensecurrentsituationUndertheleadershipoffull-timeteacherWangFangquan,somestudentsoftheNationalPekingRailwayManagementCollege,whichhasalwaysbeenwell-knownforcultivatingadvancedindustrialtechnologyandmanagementtalents,traveledsouthtoShanghaibysea,andnegotiatedwithLiZhaohuan,presidentofShanghaiJiaotongUniversity,andplannedtousetheschoolpremisestoresumeschool.NotlongaftertheShanghaiAnti-JapaneseWarbrokeout,theNanjingNationalistGovernmentmovedwesttoWuhan.Atthistime,agroupofstudentsmovedsouthalongtheBeijing-GuangzhouRailwayandgatheredinHankoutoformanalumniassociationtocallShanghai,urgingWangFangquantopresideovertheresumptionofclasses.Facedwiththenationaldisaster,WangFangquantookthestudentsarrivinginShanghaitoandfrowiththeardentcallofthestudents,andboardedthepassengershipoftheSwireCompanyoftheBritishCommercialCompany,andarrivedinHankoufromJiangxi.WhenWangFangquanlearnedthathisstudentGuYuxiu,whowasteachingatTsinghuaUniversity,accompaniedChenLifuastheundersecretaryoftheMinistryofEducation,hepersonallywenttodiscussthereopeningofschoolwithGu.Whentheteachersandstudentsmet,GuYuxiuwasdeeplymovedbyWangFangquan'sspiritofstickingtotheteachingpositionandparticipatinginthenationaldisaster.Later,ZhangChong,alumnigraduatedfromtheschoolin1925,helpedhimandobtainedtheapprovalfortheresumptionofclasses.Sincethen,thePekingRailwayManagementSchoolofNationalChiaoTungUniversityhasbeenabletoresumeschoolamidstthewar.InJanuary1938,thePingSchoolofJiaotongUniversitymergedintotheTangshanInstituteofEngineeringinXiangtanCounty,HunanProvince,andbecamethe"TangshanInstituteofTechnologyRailwayManagementDepartment";inMayofthesameyear,theschoolmovedtoXiangxiangCounty,HunanProvince.
DuetotheJapaneseinvasion,inJanuary1939,theschoolwasforcedtomovetoPingyueCounty,GuizhouProvince(nowFuquanCity,GuizhouProvince).Theschoolwasdriftingawayalltheway,andtherewereveryfewbooksleft.UndertheinitiativeofJinShixuan,aflatalumnusofJiaotongUniversity,alumnifromalloverthecountryraiseddonationsandpurchasedmorethanathousandbooksfortheschool.(In2013,thelibrarycollectionofBeijingJiaotongUniversitycanalsoseebookswiththestampof“SponsoredbytheAlumniofBeijingJiaotongUniversityinChongqing”andthealumniname.ThefoundationstoneandprecioushistoricalrelicsoftheVietNamJiaotongUniversityweresenttoBeijingJiaotongUniversitytocommemoratethehistoryoftheNationalChiao"College"wasrenamed"JiaotongUniversityTangshanEngineering,PekingRailwayManagementJointCollege".However,thenamewasnotofficiallyusedduetohighopposition.
InJanuary1942,theMinistryofEducationoftheRepublicofChinarenamedtheschooltoGuizhouBranchofNationalJiaotongUniversity(includingPingandTanghospitals).
In1944,theschoolmovedtoDingjia'ao(nowChongqingCity),BishanCounty,SichuanProvince,untiltheendoftheJapanesewarofaggressionagainstChina.
InApril1946,theYuanpingandTangcourtswereseparated,andtheYuanpingcourtmovedbacktoPeipingandrenamedtheNationalPekingRailwayManagementInstitute.
IntheearlydaysofthefoundingofthePeople’sRepublicofChina
In1949,PeipingwaspeacefullyliberatedandtheChinesePeople’sLiberationArmystationedinPeiping;inJulyofthesameyear,theMinistryofRailwaysoftheChinesePeople’sRevolutionaryMilitaryCommissionorderedtheNationalPekingRailwayManagementInstituteandNorthChinaTransportationInstituteFormedas"ChinaJiaotongUniversity"withTangshanInstituteofTechnology.ChairmanMaoZedongappointedMaoYisheng,abridgeexpert,astheprincipal,andJinShixuan,thefounderoftheChinesetransportationdisciplineandarailwaytransportationexpert,asthevicepresident.TheschoolheadquartersislocatedinBeijing,TangshanSchoolisalsoestablished,andtheRailwayTelecommunicationsDepartmentisadded.
InAugust1950,theAdministrationoftheCentralPeople'sGovernmentorderedChinaJiaotongUniversitytochangeitsnameto"NorthernJiaotongUniversity".
In1951,ChairmanMaoZedongpersonallyinscribedtheschoolnameforNorthernJiaotongUniversity.TheoriginalposthasbeenkeptintheHistoryMuseumofBeijingJiaotongUniversity.Thefourcharacters"JiaotongUniversity"inthenamesofShanghaiJiaotongUniversityandXi'anJiaotongUniversityarealltakenfromtheoriginalpostoftheschool.InAugustofthesameyear,theschoolmovedfromthesiteofFuyouStreettothecurrentsiteofShangyuanVillage,Xizhimenwai,andaddedarailwaybusiness.Tie.
In1952,NorthernJiaotongUniversitywasrevoked,thetwohospitalsofBeijingandTangwereindependent,andtheschoolwasrenamedBeijingRailwayInstitute,directlyundertheleadershipoftheMinistryofRailwaysoftheCentralPeople'sGovernment.Alargenumberofwell-knowndepartmentssuchastheDepartmentofMaterialsandArchitectureofthemiddleschoolwereadjustedtootherschools,theDepartmentofMaterialsManagementandMaterialsEngineeringweretransferredtothenewlyestablishedBeijingIronandSteelInstitute,andtheDepartmentofArchitectureincludingAcademicianPengYigangwastransferredtoTianjinUniversity,thematerialappraisalmajorwastransferredtoTsinghuaUniversity,andthetelecommunicationsdepartment,telecommunicationsmajor,andRussianlanguagemajorweretransferredtoHarbinRailwayInstitute.
In1953,theMinistryofRailwaysdecidedtomergeHarbinRailwayInstituteandBeijingRailwayInstitute.
In1954,postgraduateeducationbegan.
In1956,theschoolrestoredtheDepartmentofRailwayArchitecture(CivilEngineering),RailwayMachineryDepartment,ElectricalEngineeringDepartment,andAppliedScienceDepartment.
In1958,somefacultymembersoftheDepartmentofTelecommunications,DepartmentofTransportation,andDepartmentofElectricalEngineeringofBeijingRailwayUniversitymovedtoLanzhoutogetherwithsomefacultymembersofTangshanRailwayInstitutetoformLanzhouRailwayInstitute.ProfessorofBeijingJiaotongUniversity,oneofthefoundersofChina'srailwaytransportation,ProfessorLinDamei(ascholarinaesthetics),wiredcommunicationsexpertProfessorSunQiyin,andradiotechnologyexpertProfessorBanJichaoweretransferredtoLanzhouRailwayUniversityatthesametime.
In1960,theCentralCommitteeoftheCommunistPartyofChinaapprovedBeijingRailwayInstituteasoneofthe64nationalkeyuniversities.
In1966,whentheCulturalRevolutionbegan,theschoolstoppednormalteachingandenrollment.
In1970,withtheapprovalofZhouEnlai,thenPremieroftheStateCouncil,theschoolrestoreditsnameas"NorthernJiaotongUniversity".Inthesameyear,theschoolwasgoingtomovetoShijiazhuangCity,HebeiProvince.Infact,theschoolisstillrunninginBeijing.
Reformandopeningup
In1977,theCulturalRevolutionended.TheStateCouncilapprovedtheschooltobetransferredfromShijiazhuangCitytoBeijing,andtheschoolbegannormalteachingandenrollment.Inthesameyear,theschoolestablishedtheDepartmentofElectronicEngineering.
In1981,withtheapprovaloftheStateCouncil,theschoolbecamethefirstbatchofdoctoral,master,andbachelor'sdegreegrantingunitsinChina.Atthesametime,itcanindependentlyverifythequalificationsofassociateprofessors,professorsanddoctoralsupervisors.
In1984,theGraduateSchoolwasestablished.
In1985,theschool'sDepartmentofArchitecturewasrestoredandundergraduateenrollmentresumed;in1991,theschoolsystemwaschangedtofiveyears.
In1994,theschoolpassedthepre-reviewofthe"211Project"departmentorganizedbytheMinistryofRailwaysofthePeople'sRepublicofChinaandbecameoneoftheuniversitiesthatenteredthenational"211Project"keyconstruction.
In1995,theschool'slawdepartmentresumed.
In1997,theschool's"211Project"constructionprojectfeasibilitystudyreportpassedtheexpertreviewoftheMinistryofRailways;inthesameyear,itparticipatedinthenationalundergraduateteachinglevelevaluationandwasexcellent.
In1998,theStatePlanningCommissionapprovedtheschooltobecomeoneof61universitiesinChinatostartthe"211Project"duringthe"NinthFive-YearPlan"period.
In1999,theschoolwasselectedasthefirstbatchofnationaluniversitystudentculturalqualityeducationbases.
In2000,theoriginalBeijingElectricPowerTechnicalCollegewasmerged,andtheschoolwasplacedunderthedirectmanagementoftheMinistryofEducationofthePeople’sRepublicofChinafromtheMinistryofRailwaysofthePeople’sRepublicofChina.Inthesameyear,itwasapprovedtorunagraduateschoolonatrialbasis.
In2003,theschoolresumedusingthename"BeijingJiaotongUniversity".
InJune2004,theGraduateSchoolwasformallyestablishedwiththeapprovaloftheMinistryofEducation.Itisoneofthe56graduateschoolsinChina.
In2006,heparticipatedinthenationalundergraduateteachingworklevelevaluationandwasexcellent.Inthesameyear,itwasapprovedtopilottheNationalDemonstrationSoftwareAcademy.
In2007,theschoolwasselectedforthefirsttimeinthenational“111Plan”.
In2008,theschoolbecameakeyconstructionuniversityofthenational"985ProjectAdvantageDisciplineInnovationPlatform"project.Inthesameyear,itbecameanationalgraduatetrainingmechanismreformpilotuniversityandanationaluniversitystudentinnovativeexperimentalplanimplementationschool.
In2009,itwasestablishedasatrainingbaseforpostgraduatesjointlyorganizedbyindustry-university-researchinstitutesinBeijinguniversities.Inthesameyear,itbecameacontractinguniversityforthepublicly-sponsoredpostgraduateprogramofnationalconstructionofhigh-leveluniversities.
In2010,theschoolwasselectedasoneofthefirstbatchof"OutstandingEngineerEducationandTrainingProgram"constructionuniversitiesbytheMinistryofEducation.Inthesameyear,itwasnamed"NationalEngineeringMasterGraduateEducationInnovationCollege"and"NationalGraduateEmploymentExperienceUniversity"".
InJune2011,BeijingJiaotongUniversityNationalSchoolofSecretsandNationalSecretsEducationandTrainingBaseBeijingBranchwasestablished.Itistheseventhnationalschoolofsecretsinmycountry,anditwasawardedthe"NationalAdvancedSecretsWork"inDecember2019.Collective"title.InOctober,theschoolbecameafoundingmemberoftheBeijingHighTechUniversityAlliance.
InMay2012,theMinistryofEducation,theMinistryofRailways,andtheBeijingMunicipalPeople’sGovernmentsignedanagreementtojointlybuildBeijingJiaotongUniversityinBeijing.
InApril2013,the"2011Plan"andthe"RailTransportationSafetyCollaborativeInnovationCenter"independentlyledbytheschoolwererecognizedbytheMinistryofEducationandbecameoneofthefirst14centersrecognizedbythecountry.

InMarch2018,theschoolwasselectedasthefirstbatchofnationalnewengineeringresearchandpracticeprojectsbytheMinistryofEducation.InMay,theschoolwasinvitedtojointheAllianceofHigh-speedRailwayUniversities(AUHSR)andservedasitschairman.
